If you don’t listen to Radio Lab you should. I podcast it (God, I hate that word). I download an .mp3 stream of the show from the internet. There, that’s better. Anyway, the other day I was listening to the episode “Musical Language” and the first bit involved this woman Diana Deutsch, who studies the psychology of music. In it they play a loop of normal speech, that, after a few repetitions, begins to sound musical. It’s really amazing. Even more, once you’ve heard it musically, you can’t go back. Every time the phrase is repeated, the speaker seems to break into song like she was on Viva Laughlin. Even after a week, listening to it again with my wife, I heard it immediately and began to laugh. Check it out for yourself.
