Tuna Matanza
An amazing photo slideshow of a mass tuna killing in Sicily.
Fishing tuna has been an long tradition in Sicily. In the last decades the tuna fishing was taken over mostly by big Japanese fishing companies to cover Japans need for red tuna used for Sushi. These pictures were taken one day at the boats of a japanese-spanish company that fished for more than one month, every day between 70 - 100 tons of tuna. The members of the crew came from Japan, Spain and about twenty of them from the village of Catelamare where the Matanza took place. The word “matanza” derives from the spanish verb “matar” which means “to kill”.
